The Williams Sisters

The Williams Sisters

I have not been following the Wimbledon tennis tournament closely but today I read that the William Sisters are going to be playing each other in the final.

Wow.

I don't know what you think about these two sisters but I have a question: How do they consistently put up such great performances in this very tough sport? Yes, that's what I'd really like to know. It cannot be easy outshining others at a sport that is traditionally considered a white-dominated sport. Is it all about their physical strength and endurance? How is it that no matter the psychological opposition they are faced with, they manage to prove their mettle?

You know, sometimes I wonder if there is any racial tension or animosity they may have to deal with. And assuming there is really no race-related hurdles they have to clear to be among the best in that sport, is it possible that the avid fans of the sport might start getting a little Williams-fatigue? Surely, they are not the only hardworking athletes out there, so I can imagine that some people might start subconsciously praying that the Williams sisters get eliminated early, right?

At any rate, what about the father of these two sisters—how does he sleep? Do Venus and Serena Williams get along as well as they let on in public? I understand they are sharing a room during this tournament—but is there any tension in the air when they talk to each other? How do they feel to know that at almost any major international tennis tournament, either (or both of them) is guaranteed a spot in the top 3? I really marvel at their consistent performance and I heartily applaud all their success.

It is going to be hard to pick one of the two for the ultimate prize. Personally, I prefer Serena's more outgoing, bubbly personality to her sister's rather reserved and perhaps nerdy mien. I have not watched their games all tournament so I have no informed opinion on who might actually be the better of the two—or who seems to be the more eager for the title. But here's something to consider:

  • Venus has won 4 Wimbledon titles already
  • Serena has won 2 Wimbledon titles already
  • Venus has won 6 overall major titles
  • Serena has won 8 overall major titles.

I could wish that Venus wins this to draw her total major title wins just shy of Serena's record. Or, I could wish that Serena wins to draw her Wimbledon title wins just shy of Venus' record. Gosh, it is so hard to choose!! You know what? May the best woman win!

Meanwhile, Richard Williams will be on his way back to the States while the daughters are on Centre Court slugging it out. He says, it will be too emotional for him watching them fight it out. Who wouldn't? Go on, Brother! Either way, it is the WILLIAMS' SHOW!!!!!

Yeah Watchman, I imagine it was going to be pretty tough for him to watch the game there. But his wife was there. Is it that she is made of sterner stuff?

Anyway, congratulations to Venus for winning her 5th straight Wimbledon title--that was certainly no mean feat!
