Making History on Nov 4: Obama or McCain?

Obama & McCain

The day is finally here.

Today is the Presidential General Election; I got to my polling station very early and discovered that many people were already standing in line! The polls here opened at 7 am but I got there an hour later. By 8.00 AM, the line was already snaking around the school building where my electoral precinct is located. Well, I suppose that many people who previously did not think much about voting found reason to do so today. Awesome isn't it?

For the record, I have always exercised my right to vote even in obscure local elections. Also, I am a very picky voter and I cannot remember ever having done a straight ticket vote ever. I take the time to go through the various propositions and all the other down-ballot issues. Furthermore, I do not vote along party lines LOL. I find it amusing now, but I remember that I changed my party affiliations often—from democrat to republican to democrat to republican until finally I settled for Independent.

When Obama announced his candidacy, there was something deeply stirring and different about him; about his politics. After studying him carefully and watching his meteoric rise to prominence, studying the mood of the country, and judging the strength of his republican opposition, I decided to re-register as a democrat. I think you get the picture: ideologically, I am far from partisan and in an overwhelmingly blue state like Maryland, it means that the pool of likeminded bipartisan (independent) citizens is comparatively small.

Well, an hour and twenty minutes later, I had cast my vote for Barack Obama and I was glad. Now, all I have to do is to wait for the results to roll in.

Of course my phone has been busy today. I have been calling lots of friends and acquaintances and urging them to go out and vote. I got a few calls from Nigeria as well—all eager to know whether a winner has been declared. Man, people are really following this election from all corners of the world! Well, I don't intend to jump the gun—I have a feeling that Obama will win with a LANDSLIDE, but I am just going to wait till this is confirmed before giving any sort of assurances to people from other parts of the world who are eager to find out what is happening.

At any rate, I am holding an election night party here—and in a few hours friends and buddies will start arriving for a great night of celebration for an Obama victory. I am already too excited. Perhaps I shouldn't be, right? Well, I am not usually giddy about anything and I suspect that if Obama wins, in a few days, the euphoria would have died down and I'd be back to take a hardnosed sober look at the implications of and challenges to an Obama administration.

But as I wait, the world waits—furthermore, I have a hunch the world would be delighted to see Obama shatter the highest ceiling! LOL

(on pins and needles, folks...... on pins and needles here)
