At long last, Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majid al-Tikriti is scheduled to meet his tragic fate of death by hanging in a few hours( possibly less than 2 hours from the time I am writing this). I am sure in the days to come, assuming he is eventually hanged, there will be lots of opinions regarding whether he should have been hanged or not. I am sure many rational and intelligent people who disapprove of capital punishment would raise their voices in protest. I am equally certain that a lot of points will be martialled to blame the actions of the current Iraqi government.
In the days to come, I hope to be able to further examine the points raised to make some sort of sense out of this. But for now, after having considered the reckless life of unrivaled brutality that this man led; his brutalization and murder of hundreds of thousands of defenseless people like his gassing of the Iraqi Kurds and the Shiites in the south; the tyranny and oppression of his government; and his funding of terrorism-- I cannot, in all honesty, fault the Iraqi government for having come down with capital punishment for this man.
Granted, this is not going to do much in the war in Iraq, but one hopes that this action sends a chilling message to despots around the world who, intoxicated by their power, have visited untold harm on innocent people. In the short run, I expect a surge in American casualties in Iraq because of his execution, but in the long run, history will remember Saddam as a megalomaniacal dictator who got kissed by Karma and ultimately met a befitting end. His death will permanently close the chapter on the bloody 23 year rule foisted upon Iraqis by Saddam Hussein, his murderous sons and members of his ruling cabal.
One hopes the thousands of Iraqis who were impoverished, victimized and brutalized by this ruthless dictator can move forward from this point to chart their own destinies--the instability and strife in Iraq now notwithstanding!
